How Do You Unwind?

Ahh, self-care. Such the buzzword these days, eh? Move, rest, eat, don’t eat, clear your mind, do puzzles. So confusing 🙂 Here’s my short list of favorite things to do to unwind:

  • Read (ahem, I don’t always fall asleep)
  • Stare at my phone (not the best idea, but I’m being honest)
  • Nap!
  • Wrap in my fuzzy robe and socks for a few minutes
  • Color
  • Favorite reruns of shows
  • Massage (you knew I was going to say that!)

What do you like to do? Run? Yoga? Nap? Knit?

Body Image

Body image. Almost everybody has something about their body that they don’t like. For many people it’s a minor issue, no big deal. But some people have a major issue with their body image. It affects how they live and their happiness.

When I tell some people that I’m a massage therapist it can cause a strong reaction. They tell me, whether verbally or through their reaction and body language, that massage is not for them. Their body image is such an issue that they don’t think anybody else can accept them.

The paradox here is that massage can really help with body image issues. In massage school we were all nervous about taking off our clothes and letting somebody else touch us. It didn’t take long for us to discover that bodies are just bodies and become much more comfortable with our own. We also experienced how good receiving a massage made us feel. Something unexpected happened – when our bodies felt better we felt better about our bodies.

I think there are three options to consider. Let’s look at the risk versus reward for them.

1. Don’t get a massage.

This is the easiest because it involves doing nothing. The risk is low since you are not letting another person see or touch you at all.

The reward is zero. You didn’t get a massage so your body doesn’t feel any better, and you still have the stress you had before.

2. You get a massage, but the massage therapist either makes note of how you look, as if it matters.

If this has happened to you, I’m sorry. You got a crappy massage therapist. That’s a bummer, and I’m really sorry. You took a risk, and even if the rest of the massage was decent, got very little reward.
This is not going to happen if you come to me. Never. No way. I can’t say this strongly enough. It goes against the very nature of who I am, how I treat people, and what I believe.

3. You get a massage. A great massage. And the therapist does nothing to make you feel uncomfortable about your body. In fact, you feel pretty good about your body after the massage.

Relax

In this option your risk is low. I don’t care how your body looks. That’s none of my business. I just want to help it feel better. Your reward is high. Again your body will feel better from the massage and you can start feeling better about it.

I have no idea how your body got to be in the condition that it’s in. You may be dealing with something that you can’t control, such as a medical condition or an injury or accident. You may be in a lot of pain or are limited in what you can do physically. Since I don’t know what caused your body to be like it is now I can’t make any judgments about you.

I’ve worked on hundreds – maybe thousands – of people. Each body is interesting and I’ve yet to come across one that I could not help.

If you have been avoiding massage because you feel uncomfortable about your body, let’s find an option that works for you. You don’t even have to explain anything to me. Leave your clothes on. Stay sitting up or face down or lying on your side or however you want. It’s up to you.
It’s my job to help you feel better. That’s it. Together let’s find a way to help you relieve your pain and stress. Don’t let your body image keep you from feeling good.

Reset With a Professional Massage

Does it feel like you are being pulled in a hundred different directions?

Obligations, deadlines, appointments, meetings, end-of-the-year school “fun,” work, housework, sports, etc. It seems there aren’t enough minutes in the day or days in the week for all that needs to be done.

All this chaos can be hard on your body and mind.

If you are like me, when things get busy you eat  less mindfully, sleep poorly, and junk food more. Oh, the fun and stressful busy-ness of life!

Running ragged is exhausting! But, wait, you’re tired and can’t sleep? Thoughts chasing each other in your head makes falling asleep more like a dream than reality. Tossing and turning to find comfort due to a pain in the neck is frustrating. Hips hurt, shoulders ache, and your head only wants to rest.

I can’t do anything about your food or schedule, but I can administer a professional massage relaxing enough to reset your brain and sooth your tired body.

Massage therapy resets your body and mind.

I have spent the last 14 years creating a solid relaxation massage with the ability to focus on pain relief. It is a wonderful combination of zen and therapy. An hour on a massage table resets your thoughts, slows your pulse, regulates your breathing, and recharges your mind.

What’s stopping you from making an appointment?

Magic in a tube.

Shea butter, beeswax, and essential oils blend beautifully to tend to your different skin or mood needs. Shea butter works as a safe carrier for the perfect amounts of essential oils making skin application a breeze. Perfectly Posh’s unique Skin Sticks look like giant lip balm but you apply them to different areas of your skin.

The Perk! Stick utilizes peppermint oil to ease tension headaches.

The Purifier combines Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus for a unique blend excellent for stuffy noses, allergies, and bug bites.

This week, Posh is featuring Flower Child Skin Stick.  “Grape seed, rosehip, and anti-aging argan oils blend with shea butter and beeswax to hydrate, plump, and help tired, dull skin look fresh as a daisy. Smooth this lightly floral scented Skin Stick over dry or impaired skin as often as needed for added moisture and protection. Keep cool. Melts easily.” It is a light floral scent, like roses.

Posh aptly named the lavender skin stick Sleepy Sleep! Lavender is also good for relieving itchy, inflamed skin, sunburns, and bites.

Or, you know, magic in a tube.

What’s your favorite Posh Skin Stick? Never tried one? Which one looks the most interesting?

Poshy Self-Care

It’s a beautiful overcast morning! I hear birds singing, wind blowing, and rain *almost* breaking through the clouds. I have the house to myself for a bit before I go to the office. I am enjoying the natural silence. Relaxing. Recharging. Preparing for my day. More self-care talk.

My self-care has changed a bit the last few months. I’ve switched out all my drugstore brand bath products for Perfectly Posh. Posh uses naturally based ingredients to create the best smelling stuff! Primer Complete

The walls are primed! Whew! Primer is not easy to apply, especially when you aren’t good at DIY stuff.

Paint is purchased. It’s a muted, beautiful Medici Gray. If you want to see it, you’ll have to make an appointment for massage 🙂

The renovation and decoration will not be complete by opening day. All paint will be done, but I have a few plans for the decor. Baby steps!

I’ll be back to work tonight and will finish the first coat of paint.

Happy Monday!

Remodel, Day 2

Another hour, another step accomplished! One and 1/4 walls primed for paint. Not too bad for someone who doesn’t do DIY well.
What I’ve done:

  • Gathered paint swatches to ponder
  • Primed 1 1/4 walls
  • Got totally addicted to a podcast, “Homecoming.” It’s a psychological thriller. *
  • Learned I can only handle Kilz about an hour at a time.

* I didn’t realize there were podcasts that are shows! I LOVE it. I can imagine everything myself.

Now to decide which color paint 😉

PS I am having major trouble adding pictures to posts. Sad face.

New Room!

A new location means a new massage space. Last night I started the official remodel! I decided to chronicle this process on the blog. I’ll share with you each new thing that happens in the space upgrade.

Wednesday, April 5, 2017:

  • Painter’s tape applied.
  • Kilz, rollers, and floor covering placed in floor.
  • Ladder elegantly angled for ease of use.
  • End for the night because the Kilz lid is stuck and I’m by myself.

Confession: I have no idea what color the walls will be!

To be continued… 🙂

Taking appointments.

The Morning Rush

I don’t know about you but mornings are HECTIC  at my house. Things start out quietly, with gentle singing to wake my 8-year-old. Once the whole house is awake, cats and all, it can feel like a riptide slowly dragging me away from shore. These rushed mornings set us up for a stressful day.

“Every minute counts!”

I say this countless times! One minute we have a whole hour to use, the next I’m running in circles getting everything ready! How does this happen? I start out with good intentions. I have a plan in my head, you know? Do this, get that, brush that, prepare this, pack those, dress them, dress myself, and the list goes on. You understand, don’t you? How can we make things a little easier?

Zzzz...
Zzzz…

Prepare a few things the night before.

What can you do the night before to make the morning flow easier?

  • Set out clothes
  • Pack backpacks/folders
  • Sign any notes/teacher correspondence
  • Make sure coats, hats, gloves, shoes, belts are easy to find
  • Know what’s for breakfast
  • Pack part of lunch
  • Go to bed

Can anything help the morning rush?

  • Print a list of what your child needs to do
  • Try to go in order to create a routine rather than a rush
  • Get yourself up 15-30 minutes earlier to gather your thoughts, have caffeine, and mentally prepare (I know, I said earlier, but it might help)
  • Play your kid’s favorite music for some lighthearted motivation
  • Do NOT turn on the TV
  • If you yell a lot try saying what you yell in a singing voice. It’s still loud but not as harsh. Easier on your body, easier on your kid’s body.

You’ll come together as a team with jobs to do. You will still need to move swiftly, but maybe with a little preparation and delegation things won’t be so scattered.

Once everyone and everything is dropped off or taken where they need to be do these important things:

  • Take a deep breath. You did it.
  • Let the morning go. Let it go. Even if it was a stressful, crazy race to car, let it go. It’s over. You succeeded!

Maybe our mornings could go just a tad bit smoother! And if not, we need to stop dwelling on it the rest of the day. After all, if everyone is where they need to be we succeeded!
